Traffic Lights
Dribbling warm-up with colour commands to build close control and reactions.
Setup
- 25x25 yard grid for up to 16 players
- One ball each
- All players dribbling inside the grid
How to Play
- Coach calls: Green = dribble fast, Amber = slow right down, Red = stop and put foot on ball
- Progress to: Blue = turn and go back, Yellow = change direction with a cut or drag-back
- Players must keep their head up to hear and react to each colour
Rules
- Progress: add a knockout element - players try to kick others' balls out while reacting to calls
- Shrink the grid after 3 minutes to increase pressure
1
Keep the ball within one stride - if it gets away, you can't react to commands2
Use different parts of the foot for different speeds, not just the toe3
Knees soft and weight on the balls of your feet before every turn2
1v1 Dribbling Channels
Attackers take on defenders in narrow channels - develop the habit of taking players on.
Setup
- Four 5x15 yard channels side by side
- One attacker and one defender per channel
- Small target goals (cones) at each end
How to Play
- Attacker starts with the ball and tries to dribble past the defender to score
- Defender must stay in their channel - no slide tackles
- Rotate roles every 90 seconds
Progressions
- Progress 1: attacker gets two touches maximum before committing to a move
- Progress 2: defender can follow attacker into the next channel - true 1v1 anywhere
1
Get your body between the ball and the defender before making your move2
Commit to the move - half-hearted dummies don't work3
Use pace changes, not just direction changes - slow the defender down first3
2v2 to Mini Goals
Small-sided game focused on dribbling to create chances in tight spaces.
Setup
- 20x15 yard pitch per game, run two or three pitches simultaneously
- 2v2 on each pitch with mini goals or cone goals at each end
- One ball per pitch
How to Play
- Standard rules - score by dribbling through or shooting into the mini goal
- No goalkeeper - outfield only
- Ball out of play = kick-in from the sideline
Key Focus
- Award a bonus point for a goal scored after beating a player with a dribble
- Progress: 3v2 overload to give attackers more dribbling opportunities
1
If you have a 1v1 opportunity, take the player on rather than passing2
Dribble forward when you can - backwards dribbling gives nothing away3
Defender: stay goal-side and force the attacker onto their weaker foot4
Free Play
Open game - let the players use what they've worked on.
Setup
- Full-width pitch or available space
- Even teams, standard goals or cones
- Coach steps back
How to Play
- Standard football, no restrictions
- Players self-organise
Coach role: Watch for moments where players use moves from the session. Don't coach - observe and note moments to reference in the review.

Stretch & Review

Stretches
- Players in a circle, seated or standing
- Quad stretch, hip flexor, calf stretch - 30 seconds each
Q1. What move did you try today that you haven't used before in a game?
Q2. When is the right moment to take someone on - and when should you pass instead?
Q3. One dribbling skill you'll work on before next session?
