Defensive Shape Walk-Through
Structured warm-up where the whole team moves together as a defensive block - no ball, pure shape.
Setup
- Half pitch, no ball
- Team arranged in their defensive shape: four defenders and three midfielders
- Coach or assistant points to show where the 'ball' is
How to Play
- Coach points left - the whole defensive unit shifts left together, staying compact
- Coach points right - the unit shifts right
- Coach shouts 'press!' - nearest player goes, the rest hold and shift behind them
Rules
- Progress: add a ball and a feeder passing it around the outside; unit reacts to the ball, not the coach's points
- Add the full 11 players and walk through the shape at match speed
1
The whole unit moves as one - if one player doesn't shift, there's a gap2
Compact means tight horizontally and tight vertically - no flat lines, no big spaces between lines3
The player not pressing must move to cover, not stand still and watch2
Recovery Run Gates
Players practise sprinting to recover their defensive position after being caught out of shape.
Setup
- Full pitch in two halves
- Pairs: one attacker with a ball, one defender starting 5 yards further from goal than the attacker
- Defender must sprint back to a cone positioned behind the attacker (their recovery gate) before the attacker reaches it
How to Play
- On the coach's signal, the attacker dribbles forward and the defender sprints to recover
- Defender must reach the recovery gate before the attacker, then can attempt to win the ball
- If the defender fails to recover in time, the attacker gets a free shot on goal
Progressions
- Progress 1: move the defender's start position further back to make recovery harder
- Progress 2: the attacker can go either left or right once past the gate - defender must adjust mid-run
1
Sprint at full pace when recovering - a slow jog never gets you back in time2
Recover to get goal-side first, ball-side second3
Don't dive in the moment you recover - hold your shape and force a wide angle3
Low Block Defending Game
Defending team starts outnumbered and must hold their shape to keep a clean sheet for 3 minutes.
Setup
- 40x30 yard pitch with a full-size goal at one end (no goal at the other end)
- 6 attackers vs 4 defenders plus goalkeeper
- Defenders score by clearing the ball over the halfway line; attackers score normally
How to Play
- Defending team of 4 must hold their shape and prevent the 6 attackers from scoring for 3 minutes
- If defenders hold out, they earn a point; if attackers score, they earn two
- Rotate the defending team every 3 minutes
Key Focus
- Defenders must stay in their half - no pressing high, focus on the defensive block
- Progress: equalise numbers to 5v5 as defenders improve
1
Four defenders must be compact - small gaps between players, big distances to the touchline2
Drop deep enough that the attackers cannot play in behind easily3
Stay patient - a good defensive shape makes the attackers take low-quality shots4
Free Play
Open game - observe whether the shape and recovery habits carry into an unstructured game.
Setup
- Full pitch, standard goals with goalkeepers
- Even teams
- Coach steps back
How to Play
- Standard football, no restrictions
- Players self-organise
Coach role: Watch what happens when the team loses the ball. Do they recover as a unit or chase individually? Do they hold shape or spread out? Note it for the review.

Stretch & Review
Stretches and a review on defensive shape and collective responsibility.
Stretches
- Players in a circle, seated on the ground
- Hamstring stretch, groin stretch, shoulder stretch - 30 seconds each
Q1. What does it mean to be 'compact' as a defensive unit - can someone show with their hands?
Q2. When we held our shape well today, what made it work?
Q3. What's one habit you'll try to keep in your next match when your team doesn't have the ball?
