Rondo Warm-Up
Possession circle to sharpen awareness, movement and quick decision making from the start.
Setup
- Circle roughly 12 yards across
- Groups of 8 - six players on the outside, two defenders in the middle
- One ball per group, run two circles simultaneously
How to Play
- Outside players keep possession, defenders try to intercept or force an error
- If a defender wins the ball or it goes out of the circle, the player who lost it swaps with that defender
- Outside players must move constantly - no standing still
Rules
- Progress: two-touch maximum on the outside to increase decision speed
- Progress: defenders count to 5 aloud - if outside still have the ball, they get a point
1
Show for the ball on an angle, not directly behind a defender2
Receiver: decide where you're passing before the ball reaches you3
The player without the ball creates the space - movement off the ball is the job2
Positional Play Zones
Zoned pitch where players must make decisions about when to stay, move and switch play.
Setup
- 40x30 yard pitch divided into four vertical zones
- Two teams of 5, one ball
- Players free to move between zones but only one player per team per zone at any time
How to Play
- Teams try to move the ball from one end to the other using the zones
- A player moving into a zone signals a teammate to vacate it
- Score by playing a pass through the opposition's end zone
Progressions
- Progress 1: maximum two touches per player
- Progress 2: a bonus point for switching the ball from one side zone to the other in one pass
1
Find the free zone before the ball arrives, not after2
Look at where the space is, not where the ball is3
When the ball is on one side, the opposite side should be creating depth and width3
Transition Overload Game
Fast-transition small-sided game that rewards teams who recognise and exploit moments quickly.
Setup
- 40x30 yard pitch with two full goals and goalkeepers
- 5v5 outfield plus GKs
- A neutral player (wearing bib) joins whichever team has the ball, creating a 6v5 overload
How to Play
- The neutral player switches to the team that wins the ball - always making it an overload
- Teams must recognise the moment possession changes and play quickly before the neutral joins the new attack
- Standard goals score normally
Key Focus
- Award a bonus point for scoring within 10 seconds of winning the ball
- Progress: two neutral players to increase the pace of switching
1
Head up the moment you win the ball - see where the space is immediately2
The player nearest the ball drives forward on transition, not back3
Think two passes ahead, not one4
Free Play
Open game - watch for decision quality without prompting.
Setup
- Full pitch, standard goals with goalkeepers
- Even teams
- Coach steps back entirely
How to Play
- Standard football rules, no restrictions
- Players self-organise and make their own decisions
Coach role: Watch for moments where players make a decision instinctively that worked - this is what you've been building toward. Note it for the review.
