5v2 Rondo
High-tempo possession circle to sharpen short combination passing from the first minute.
Setup
- Two groups of 7 - five outside, two defenders in the middle
- Circle roughly 10 yards across
- One ball per group
How to Play
- Outside players keep possession using a maximum of two touches
- Defenders intercept or force errors - player responsible swaps in
- Outside players must move constantly after passing, not stand still
Rules
- Progress: one-touch only on the outside after 4 minutes
- Count consecutive passes as a team to build a record to beat next session
1
Play the ball to the player who faces forward, not the one facing the defender2
After you pass, move immediately - your movement creates the next passing option3
The player two passes ahead needs to move now, not when the ball arrives2
Third-Man Run Patterns
Three-player combination where the first two passes create a run for the third player arriving late.
Setup
- Three cones in an L-shape: A at the start, B 10 yards ahead, C 10 yards wide of B
- Player at A, player at B, player starting from behind A
- Run three groups simultaneously
How to Play
- A passes to B; B plays a one-two back to A; A then plays into the run of the third player arriving from behind
- Third player (C) times their run so they receive moving forward at full speed
- Rotate positions after every three repetitions
Progressions
- Progress 1: third player makes a curved run so they receive facing goal
- Progress 2: add a passive defender on the third player's run - they must time it to stay onside
- Progress 3: finish with a shot on a full-size goal 15 yards away
1
Third player: start your run as the first pass is made, not when A plays the through ball2
The through ball must be played into space for the runner, not to their feet3
B's one-touch pass back to A must be firm and accurate - a slow pass breaks the move3
Switch of Play Game
SSG that rewards teams for switching the ball quickly from one side to the other before attacking.
Setup
- 45x35 yard pitch with two full-size goals and goalkeepers
- 5v5 outfield
- Two wide target zones marked with cones along each touchline
How to Play
- Standard game with one rule: before scoring, your team must play into one wide zone and then switch to the other
- Once both wide zones have been used in a move, the goal is live
- Switching can happen with one long pass or multiple short passes
Key Focus
- First 10 minutes: zones must be used. Final 10: zones optional but award a bonus point if used
- Progress: reduce the number of touches allowed in the wide zones to two to speed up switching
1
When the ball is wide on the left, the right side must be calling and ready to receive immediately2
A long switch is only useful if the player on the far side can control it cleanly3
After the switch, play forward quickly before the opposition's shape shifts across4
Free Play
Open game - look for combination play and switching to appear naturally.
Setup
- Full pitch, standard goals with goalkeepers
- Even teams
- Coach steps back
How to Play
- Standard football, no restrictions
- Players self-organise
Coach role: Watch for one-twos and third-man runs appearing without prompting. If they do, note them for the review. If they don't, that's a coaching point too.
