Aerial Challenge Warm-Up
Headers and aerial control warm-up to prepare bodies and minds for defending deliveries into the box.
Setup
- Players in pairs across the pitch, 5 yards apart
- One ball between two
- Player throws the ball up for their partner to head back
How to Play
- Partner A throws gently to chest height; Partner B heads back firmly
- After 2 minutes: A throws higher so B must jump to head
- After 4 minutes: competitive - A tries to head over B's hands, B tries to catch before it passes
Rules
- Progress: three players in a line - middle player heads from one side to the other continuously
- Add movement: partner must take a step before the header so they're always attacking the ball
1
Attack the ball - jump to meet it, don't let it drop to you2
Eyes open, make contact with the forehead not the top of the head3
Defender heading away: aim for height and distance, not accuracy2
Defending Corners & Free Kicks
Practise zonal and man-marking setups against corners and free kicks from wide areas.
Setup
- Full-size goal with goalkeeper
- Defending team of 8 set up in their defensive shape
- 3 attackers take corners and free kicks, 3 attackers make runs into the box
How to Play
- Corner routine A: defenders hold a zonal block of 4 across the 6-yard box; 2 man-mark specific attackers; 2 guard the near and back post
- Corner routine B: switch to full man-marking - each defender is assigned one attacker before the kick is taken
- Free kick from wide: defensive wall of two, GK organises the rest into their zones
Progressions
- After each set piece, defenders immediately play out to a target player - get comfortable transitioning from defending to attacking
- Let attackers use their Session 1 routines so defenders face realistic movements
1
GK takes ownership: loud and early claim, or clear instruction if leaving it to defenders2
Zonal defenders: step to the ball, don't wait for it - attack the space, not the attacker3
Man-markers: get in front of your attacker before the ball is delivered, not after3
Set Piece Survival Game
Game where every dead ball is a set piece - defending team scores points for each one they survive.
Setup
- 40x30 yard pitch with two full-size goals and goalkeepers
- 5v5 plus GKs
- Every foul, corner or out of play is a proper set piece with everyone positioned
How to Play
- Attacking team scores normally; defending team earns a point for surviving a set piece without conceding
- Surviving means winning the ball cleanly and playing it out of the danger area
- A scrambled clearance that stays in the box does not count as surviving
Key Focus
- After 10 minutes: switch so the other team defends and both teams compare their survival points
- Progress: attacking team can call which routine they are using so defenders must adapt their shape
1
Set your shape before the ball is delivered, not after - the free seconds before a corner are not wasted time2
First to the ball after a clearance is vital - don't switch off after you clear it3
Communicate clearly: one voice organises, everyone else listens and confirms4
Free Play
Open game with full set piece discipline - all restarts taken properly.
Setup
- Full pitch, standard goals with goalkeepers
- Even teams, all restarts taken as proper set pieces
- Coach steps back
How to Play
- Standard football rules
- No shortcuts on restarts - all corners, free kicks and throw-ins set up properly
Coach role: Watch how quickly the defending team gets into shape after the game is stopped. The pause before a set piece is the most important coaching moment - are they using it?

Stretches
- Players in a circle, seated on the ground

Q1. What's the difference between a zonal and a man-marking setup - when would you use each?
Q2. Who has the most important job when defending a corner, and why?
Q3. One thing we'll agree as a team to do at every corner we defend in our next match?
