4v2 Rondo
High-tempo possession warm-up to get brains and feet working quickly from the off.
Setup
- Two groups of 6 - four outside players, two defenders in the middle
- Circle or square roughly 10 yards across
- One ball per group
How to Play
- Outside players keep possession; defenders press and try to win the ball
- Player who gives the ball away swaps with the defender who wins it
- Outside players must move to offer angles continuously
Rules
- Two-touch maximum on the outside from the start
- Progress: one-touch only to increase the tempo further
1
Give the ball to the player who can play forward, not just the nearest one2
When the defender presses one player, the others must shift to create new passing angles3
Stay connected to the circle shape - don't let gaps appear2
3-Zone Possession
Structured possession drill that teaches players to recognise when to hold the ball and when to play forward.
Setup
- Pitch divided into three equal horizontal zones: defensive, middle, attacking
- 6v6 with each team defending one end zone
- Four players can enter the middle zone; two stay in each end zone
How to Play
- Score by playing the ball into your target player in the opposition's end zone
- Target player must control and hold the ball to score the point
- Players must respect zone numbers - no flooding one area
Progressions
- Progress 1: three-touch limit in the middle zone to speed up circulation
- Progress 2: remove zone restrictions and let the game flow naturally to see if the shape holds
1
In the middle zone, move the ball quickly and look for the forward pass early2
End zone players: check your shoulder constantly so you know where the press is coming from3
If the forward pass isn't on, recycle calmly - don't force it3
Tournament Format SSG
Round-robin mini-tournament format to keep energy high and reward quick adjustment.
Setup
- Three 25x20 yard pitches side by side
- Three teams of 4-5 players, rotating on a 5-minute timer
- Winner stays on, loser rotates to the next pitch
How to Play
- Standard small-sided game rules on each pitch
- Teams rotate every 5 minutes regardless of score
- Players accumulate individual points for goals scored across all games
Key Focus
- Bonus point for a team that scores within 60 seconds of conceding
- Final 5 minutes: best two teams play each other on the main pitch
1
You meet a new opponent each rotation - adapt your approach, don't just repeat the same patterns2
The team that keeps the ball compact when defending will win more games3
Communicate constantly - call for the ball, call out runners, call shape4
Free Play
Open game after a session of structured formats - let players reset and enjoy.
Setup
- Full-width pitch, standard goals with goalkeepers
- Even teams chosen by players
- Coach stays off the pitch
How to Play
- Standard football rules, no restrictions
- Players pick their own positions and organise themselves
Coach role: Step well back. This is their time. Observe whether the compact shape and quick passing from the session shows up naturally.
