Ball Mastery Moves
Children practise simple ball mastery moves on the spot — inside, outside, sole rolls and toe taps.
Setup
- Every child has a ball, spread across the area in their own space
- Coach demonstrates each move before asking children to copy
- No competition — everyone explores at their own pace
How to Play
- Toe taps: alternate tapping the top of the ball with each foot, 15 taps
- Sole rolls: roll the ball side to side with the sole of the foot
- Inside-outside: push the ball out with the outside, back with the inside of the same foot
- After each move, let children free dribble for 30 seconds
Rules
- Count the taps aloud together — the group counting in unison builds cohesion
- Progress: add a scissor (step-over) once other moves feel comfortable
- Let a confident child demonstrate a move they know to the group

Soft touch — the ball should stay within one step2
Eyes up between touches — not staring at the ball the whole time3

Cone Dribble & Turn
Children dribble to a cone, use a turn to change direction, then dribble back. Teaches three key turns.
Setup
- Each child or pair has two cones 10 yards apart
- Every child has a ball
- Coach demonstrates each turn before children try it
How to Play
- Session 1: dribble to the far cone and stop the ball with the sole (drag-back), dribble back
- Session 2: dribble to the cone and use the inside of the foot to turn (Cruyff-style pivot)
- Session 3: choose their own favourite turn to use
Progressions
- Time challenge: how many trips can they do in 60 seconds?
- Progress: add a defender who can only shadow, not tackle, so children feel safe
- Let children name their turns — kids who name things remember them

1v1 Channels
Simple 1v1 in a narrow channel — attacker tries to dribble past the defender to score in a small goal.
Setup
- Mark 3-4 narrow channels (5 yards wide, 12 yards long) each with a small goal at one end
- Pairs: one attacker, one defender per channel
- Attacker starts with the ball 8 yards from goal, defender between them and goal
How to Play
- Attacker tries to dribble past the defender and score
- If the defender wins the ball they can score in a mini cone goal at the opposite end
- Rotate roles every 2 minutes — everyone defends and attacks
Key Focus
- Attacker gets 3 attempts before roles swap
- Progress: remove the small goal and attacker must simply dribble over the end line
- Keep channels short — 1v1s should be over quickly so repetitions stay high
1
Attacker: head up, use a move to go past — not just running faster2
Defender: stay on their feet, do not dive in3
Celebrate any successful dribble, not just goals4
Dribble Tag
Everyone dribbles — if tagged, do 5 toe taps then rejoin. High intensity and lots of the ball.
Setup
- Every child has a ball in a 20x20 yard grid
- Two taggers (no ball) try to tag dribbling players
- Tagged players do 5 toe taps on the spot then re-enter
How to Play
- Dribble to avoid being tagged by the taggers
- Quick toe tap forfeit means no one is out for long
- Rotate taggers every 90 seconds
Notes
- Progress: taggers have a ball too and must keep it while tagging
- Shrink the grid by one step on each side every minute

Cool Down
Light stretches and a discussion about what they tried today.
Stretches
- Sit in a circle with their balls
Q1. Which turn did you like best today?
Q2. Did anyone manage to go past a defender? What did they do?
Q3. Show me your best ball mastery move!
